Statement on Fire and Fatality at Plummy Fashions Ltd.

It is with great sadness that the Accord has learned that on 9 November 2017, a worker died after suffering extensive burns in a fire which occurred six days earlier at the Accord covered factory Plummy Fashions Ltd., located in North Norshingpur, Kashipur, Fatullah, Narayangonj.

The Accord expresses our deepest sympathies and condolences to the victim’s family. The Accord sent a fire engineer to the factory on 7 November to conduct a post-fire inspection.

Smart Group RMG factories removed from terminated suppliers list

Smart Group RMG factories removed from Accord list of terminated suppliers to comply with the interim order of the High Court Division of Bangladesh.

The Accord has removed the Smart Group RMG factories from the list of terminated suppliers in accordance with a recent interim Order of the High Court Division of Bangladesh.

Smart Group was terminated by the Accord in April 2016 for falsifying concrete strength test results to report higher than actual strength. After termination, Smart Group initiated legal proceedings which are now pending hearing before the High Court Division of Bangladesh.

2 similar cases were filed in the Dutch Courts by a joint venture partner of Smart Group. The Dutch Courts denied the petitioners’ claims in both of these cases.

Accord Will Depart Bangladesh When Local Regulatory Body Demonstrates Full Capacity to Inspect Factories, Compel Remedies, and Protect Workers
The Government of Bangladesh has agreed that the Accord on Fire and Building Safety in Bangladesh (the Accord) will continue to operate in Bangladesh until a set of rigorous readiness conditions are met by local regulatory bodies.

This agreement was reached at meetings on 19 October between brand and trade union signatories to the Accord, the BGMEA, and the Bangladesh Ministers of Commerce and Labour. The Accord is ready to continue operations beyond May 2018 as all parties recognize, substantial additional capacity-building is necessary before responsibility to protect workers in factories producing for Accord signatory brands can be responsibly handed over to a national regulatory body.
