Bangladesh Accord newsletter for signatories, factories and other parties interested in the Accord’s factory safety programme.

The Accord now has more than 100 engineers on staff, conducting between 400 and 500 follow-up inspections each month. Each factory is on average visited once every three months.

Company signatories and factories can expect an initial inspection within 3 to 4 months after a factory is first listed with the Accord.

Advisory Board Meeting Report

11 April 2016 Meeting (11:00 am – 1:00 pm)

The Accord on Fire and Building Safety in Bangladesh (Accord) held its eighth Advisory Board (AB) meeting on 11 April 2016 in Dhaka. Representatives from supplier factories, sourcing agents, the Ministry of Labour (DIFE), IndustriAll RMG trade union federations (IBC-RMG), Accord signatory brands, and Bangladesh NGOs/CSOs participated in the discussions. The ILO Country Director served as the neutral Chair of the meeting of the Accord Advisory Board. The 11 April 2016 meeting was the first one under the revised terms of reference which expanded the meeting and discussions to include additional persons from the Advisory Board organizations.

Communication to Accord signatories on recent earthquake impacting Bangladesh

14 April 2016

A magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck near Mandalay, Myanmar (~400 km East of Dhaka) at approximately 8:00 pm on Wednesday 13 April 2016. The tremor could be felt in Bangladesh, including Dhaka and Chittagong. The information we have is that there were no deaths and small numbers of minor injuries, from panicked persons fleeing from buildings, associated with the earthquake. Local news sources report damage to a small number (6) of buildings, particularly in Chittagong. One of these reportedly housed garment factories which are not listed Accord suppliers.
