It is with great sadness that the Accord has learned of a boiler explosion and associated partial building collapse at Multifabs Ltd.(Kashimpur, Nayapara, Gazipur, Dhaka). The boiler explosion occurred at approximately 6:15 pm on July 3, 2017. At least 10 workers were killed in the explosion and dozens more have suffered injuries. The Accord expresses our deepest sympathies and condolences to the families and loved ones of those who have perished from the explosion and wish those who have suffered injury a full and speedy recovery.
Early morning on July 4, 2017, the Accord dispatched of a team of fire, electrical, and structural engineers to conduct a post-explosion inspection at the Multifabs facility. The reports of the Accord engineers will be completed as a matter of highest priority and are expected to provide more detail on what happened, the level of damage, and what will be required regarding repairs.
The Accord conducted initial fire, electrical and structural inspections at Multifabs Ltd in 2014 and 2015. The required fire separation of the boiler room from the Accord fire safety inspections was verified as corrected by Accord engineers at a follow up inspection on October 26, 2016. Such fire separation is to contain a fire in the event one occurs in the room the boiler is located. A fire separation (fire rated construction with fully protected and sealed opening) does not address the issue of a boiler explosion. In light of the obvious need, the Accord will evaluate whether it can expand its inspection program to include boilers.
The Accord will continue to monitor the condition and medical treatment of the injured workers. The Accord encourages all brands producing at Multifabs Ltd. as well as the factory owner, to ensure that full and fair compensation is paid to the families of the workers who died and to the injured workers, consistent with the standard established by the Rana Plaza Arrangement.
